What We Do

Celebrating Academic Achievements

Every year, over 1.2 million students drop out of high school in the United States alone. That’s a student every 26 seconds – or 7,000 a day. About 25% of high school freshmen fail to graduate from high school on time. Almost 2,000 high schools across the U.S. graduate less than 60% of their students. Major reasons for dropping out include academic challenges, low parental education, lack of motivation, poverty, work or family responsibilities, and bullying.
.

While funding is an important factor in strong education systems, incentives that promote learning are even more critical. By placing high social value on academic achievement and celebrating top performers, we aim to elevate the cultural appreciation of academic achievements and encourage students to want to do well in school. Recognizing and celebrating outstanding students who have used their abilities, resourcefulness, and perseverance to be successful is a powerful incentive to young people everywhere. These high performers are our Global Change Ambassadors, serving as mentors and role models for their peers. We fondly call them the ExtraOrds for their extraordinary achievements.

In addition to holding academic excellence in high regard, we also celebrate great teachers and treat them with great respect…high-quality teachers are very important in improving students’ outcome.

Provide Academic Mentoring and Coaching

Dropping out of high school can have a negative impact on life success, yet millions of students drop out of high school in the United States every year. Factors such as poverty, unstable home life, overcrowded and underfunded schools threaten academic success. Through our simple, yet unique, academic mentoring and exam coaching program, we help students succeed in high school, graduate, and attend their dream colleges. We make this possible through our Global Change Ambassadors Program, where high-performing students are paired with at-risk students for online and offline mentoring and coaching.

Our Global Change Ambassadors help students gain the skills they need to learn more effectively and perform their best. Mentors have a great deal of influence on students’ educational aspirations and achievement, especially when the mentors and mentees are of similar age and experiences.

Global Change Ambassadors are a select group of high performing students with high GPA and SAT/ACT scores who serve as mentors, role models, and inspire other students to be the best version of themselves. We are building a network of interpersonal relationships structured to facilitate the achievement of academic excellence and outcomes in young people.

Meals and Supplies to End Childhood Hunger

In addition to addressing the academic and social barriers that stand in the way of students achieving a high school degree, we also address the physical and environmental barriers that keep students from being successful. At ExtraOrd, we provide meals, school supplies, and other physical needs to at-risk students. Hunger and lack of adequate supplies cause students to struggle academically, socially, and behaviorally. By ensuring students are well fed and well prepared for school,

ExtraOrd is helping keep students in school and on the path to graduation.

ExtraOrd provides meals, school supplies, and other assistance to poor students. We work with schools, communities, and charities all over the world to end child hunger and prevent hunger-related death in children. Today, every 10 seconds, a child dies of hunger. About 66 million primary school-age children attend classes hungry across the developing world, with 23 million in Africa alone. Children facing hunger are twice as likely to repeat a grade in elementary school and many drop out of school. Hunger affects children more than any other group and by the time you finished reading this, 12 children would have died from hunger…painful and excruciating but preventable deaths.

Hunger is also associated with stomachaches, headaches, depression, anxiety and a decreased ability to focus — all of which have an impact on educational attainment. Research has shown that hungry kids also struggle socially and behaviorally, making their experiences in school less than enjoyable. Studies have found that children from food-insecure families are more likely to drop out of high school before graduation. A hungry child can’t concentrate on lessons – improving nutrition means that a child performs better in class.

The misery of many starving poor children who attend school hungry and unfed is heartbreaking. In many developing countries there are no school meals. In fact, the concept of school meals is foreign to many students in poor countries. Learning is difficult, almost impossible with an empty stomach and the unforgiving pangs of hunger. It is a terrible thing for any child to starve to death. ExtraOrd is helping prevent this terrible misery for many poor children.
