OUR Mission

ExtraOrd™ is a nonprofit headquartered in Washington, D.C. We inspire, educate, and empower young people to succeed in school and life. We elevate academic performance and life success of young people everywhere by encouraging academic excellence, celebrating achievements, and providing support to at-risk students. At ExtraOrd, we believe anybody can be extraordinary; anybody can make a difference; and anybody can be a change agent!

Every year, over 1.2 million students drop out of high school in the United States alone. That’s a student every 26 seconds – or 7,000 a day. About 25% of high school freshmen fail to graduate from high school on time. Almost 2,000 high schools across the U.S. graduate less than 60% of their students. Major reasons for dropping out include academic challenges, low parental education, lack of motivation, poverty, work or family responsibilities, and bullying.

The consequence of dropping out of high school can be dire and limiting. Dropping out from high school makes finding a job more difficult, can lead to negative life outcomes and can perpetuate the cycle of poverty. Young people who dropout of high school are unlikely to have the minimum skills and credentials necessary to function in today’s increasingly complex society and technology-dependent workplace. The completion of high school is usually required for accessing post-secondary education, and is a minimum requirement for most jobs. A high school dropout will earn $260,000 less than a high school graduate over his lifetime. And almost a million dollars less than a college graduate.

The bleak outcomes from dropping out of high school raise concerns about the future of many high school kids especially in the face of a changing global education landscape and job market. Our goal is to change this. We believe every student can succeed and we are supporting them to be extraordinary and the best version of themselves.

Promotion of high academic performance and educational opportunity is at the heart of the work we do across the globe. We celebrate high-performing students, inspire those who are struggling, and support those who need help to succeed. We believe that motivated students are the best learners.

High academic performance increases self-confidence, leads to better life outcomes of individuals and the economic health of their communities. Our purpose is to equip young people and tomorrow’s leaders with the skills and attitudes for economic and civic success in an increasingly knowledge-based economy. We are building extraordinary leaders!

Bullying is a prevalent and serious problem in our schools. According to CDC studies, about 1 in 3 U.S. students say they have been bullied at school and 71% of young people say they have seen bullying in their schools. Students who are bullied can experience depression and anxiety, increased feelings of sadness and loneliness, decreased academic achievement and school participation. They are also more likely to miss, skip, or drop out of school. We combat bullying by recognizing academic achievements and good behavior as “The New  Cool”.

Promote  Academic Achievements

Every year, over 1.2 million students drop out of high school in the United States alone. That’s a student every 26 seconds – or 7,000 a day. About 25% of high school freshmen fail to graduate from high school on time. Almost 2,000 high schools across the U.S. graduate less than 60% of their students. Major reasons for dropping out include academic challenges, low parental education, lack of motivation, poverty, work or family responsibilities, and bullying.

While funding is an important factor in strong education systems, incentives that promote learning are even more critical. By placing high social value on academic achievement and celebrating top performers; we aim to elevate the cultural appreciation of high academic achievements and encourage our students to want to do well in school. Recognizing and celebrating outstanding students who, through their effort, resourcefulness, and ability, have shown a seriousness of purpose in their education can be a powerful incentive to young people everywhere. These high performers are the new role model for our children; they are our Global Change Ambassador and we fondly call them the ExtraOrds for their extraordinary achievements.

In addition to holding academic excellence in high regard, we also celebrate great teachers and treat them with great respect…high-quality teachers are very important in improving students’ outcome.

Provide Academic Mentoring/Coaching

For some students, factors beyond their control such as low parental education, poverty, family relationships, poor schools and low expectations threaten their academic success. Today, we are helping to bridge the gap through our simplified and unique academic mentoring and exam coaching program that help at-risk kids succeed in high school and enter their dream colleges. We partner with high achieving college students to provide online and offline Near-Peer Mentoring to at-risk students.

As many of us know, there is a strong link between mentoring and academic success. Near-Peer Mentors can help improve academic performance, and students who have exposure to near-peer mentors or student – student instructional interaction have been known to show consistent improvement in academic outcome. Mentors have a great deal of influence on students’ educational aspiration and achievement especially when the students are young and in the same generation as the mentors.

We match high performing students with students who are struggling academically, and provide the necessary supporting services to make the mentoring relationship a success. The Global Change Ambassadors –  a select group of high performing students with high GPA and SAT/ACT scores serve as mentors to other students. Our mentors impact knowledge, teach students how to learn more effectively, and inspire students to be the best they can be. We are building a network of interpersonal relationships structured to facilitate the achievement of academic excellence and outcomes in young people.

Prevent Hunger- Related Deaths in Children

ExtraOrd provides meals, school supplies, and other assistance to poor students. We work with schools, communities and charities all over the world to end child hunger and prevent hunger-related death in children. Today, every 10 seconds, a child dies of hunger. About 66 million primary school-age children attend classes hungry across the developing world, with 23 million in Africa alone. Children facing hunger are twice as likely to repeat a grade in elementary school and many dropout of school. Hunger affects children more than any other group and by the time you finished reading this, 12 children would have died from hunger…painful and excruciating but preventable deaths.

Hunger is also associated with stomachaches, headaches, depression, anxiety and a decreased ability to focus — all of which have an impact on educational attainment. Research has shown that hungry kids also struggle socially and behaviorally, making their experiences in school less than enjoyable. Studies have found that children from food-insecure families are more likely to drop out of high school before graduation. A hungry child can’t concentrate on lessons – improving nutrition means that a child performs better in class.

The misery of many starving poor children who attend school hungry and unfed is heart breaking. In many developing countries there are no school meals.  In fact the concept of school meal is foreign to many students in poor countries. Learning is difficult, almost impossible with an empty  stomach and the unforgiving pangs of hunger. It is a terrible thing for any child to starve to death. ExtraOrd is helping prevent this terrible misery for many poor children.
